Visiting Brazil 9

We're in Rio de Janeiro. (Day 3)

We begin with a special Exhibition.

(NOTE:  All of the Museum photos have been approved for posting for public view because they were photographed by me.)

Carlos Oswald (1882-1971) was a Brazilian artist, educated in Europe, & son of the composer, Henrique Oswald.  Carlos was a pioneer in metal engraving in Brazil in the first decades of the 1900s, but he ended up standing out as an painter, especially doing decorative panels in multiple public buildings in Rio de Janeiro.  He was also known for having created the design of the Christ the Redeemer statue on Corcovado Mountain!

Phillip I of Portugal or Phillip II of Spain (same man), reigned during the Iberian Union (1560-1640) when Spain & Portugal were united under the same monarch.

This highlights vessels in a rough sea.  It represents the times of the great Portuguese navigation when the Afonsino Code (Ordinances) were enacted & dominated with thanks to King Dom Afonso V (1439-1481).  It was the 1st compilation of laws of Portugal & they existed during the beginning of the colonization of the Brazilian lands.

What's behind a "culture"  -  "a society"  -  "an identity"  -  "a LIFE?!?"

This National History Museum had hundreds of text plaques of history information.  One thought-provoking reading was this info on what is culture, how does it begin - evolve - the idea of conformity & resistance . . . think about that a minute . . . everyone has to give & take somewhat to end up with peace.  The resisters have to ultimately conform to what becomes the results of their actions, which will be a consensus of the whole; the conformers will be shaken &/or uprooted from their comfort zone by the resisters, to change to a new social order, i.e. having to adapt.

And this isn't something new!  There's a book in the Old Testament of the Bible called Judges.  There are 7, what I call "Mountain & Valley" periods in that book, which the following message reminds me of.  (I rewrote the first half in "our version" of English for the message to be clearer in understanding what was said.)

Conforming and Resistances

Culture is built through shared practices and knowledge, and around them an identity-forming process is organized.  Between conforming & resistance, cultural expressions translate what the social order is, in which they were developed, which allows for the renewal to the meaning of ----->

Information

This is the 9th in a series of connected "Visiting Brazil" websites using Webnode's "free" website offer (with limited space which photos, vs. text, use up very rapidly). Having had a limited knowledge of life in Brazil (only knowing of the Amazon, jungles, & the Jesus statue), I made this website series to share our March/April 2023, month-long trip, for your enjoyment, enlightenment, and educational benefit to expand our South American cultural awareness.
